As a marketing major, these make me VERY happy, but there’s really nothing subliminal (under the level of perception) about them. What you see in many company logos (like the Tostitos one or the arrow in the FedEx logo) is just clever design used to capture your attention and make you feel a stronger connection to the brand. I was always told that Disney placed subliminal messages in their movies, but I didn’t want to believe it because I love Disney. Because humans aren’t THAT simple-minded, these types of advertising gimmicks really have no practical marketing use. However, for the message to lead to changed behavior, more time would be needed for the consumer to translate the message and choose whether or not to take action (based on the communications model studied in marketing). Subliminal messages are hidden or not so low that they are not being heard. Most people may be skeptical about the effects of subliminal messages as an effective therapy in personal development treatments. They may appear in advertisements in magazines, papers, radio, television or movies, or even music. A subliminal message is a message meant to be interpreted by the consumer below the level of conscious perception. Studies have shown that the brain can recognize that the message was shown (using classical conditioning a la “Pavlov’s Dogs” to condition palm perspiration when the subliminal message was seen). The classic example of this is the urban legend of movie theaters putting a single frame (about 1/3000th of a second) with a message of “buy more popcorn” or “drink Coke!” into a movie in an attempt to drive concession revenue. The messages projected phrases like 'Drink Coca Cola' or 'Hungry Eat popcorn'. This mind-bending meditation on toxic masculinity loves subliminal messages so much that subliminals actually figure into the plot: when Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) gets a job as a projectionist, he tells the Narrator (Edward Norton) about how he splices in a single frame of porn into a children’s movie, no less just to make the audience. The whole point of subliminal messages is that they can’t be perceived – that’s what makes them subliminal. 73.8K reads James Vicary claimed to have introduced subliminal messages with big advertisement effects in 1957 when he conducted an experiment with very quickly flashing messages in the movies of a cinema in New Jersey. I think you’re getting subliminal messages confused with clever design.
